Xomezana

In the heart of the municipality of Lena, between the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, lie the villages of Xomezana Riba and Xomezana Baxo, known for their rich history, traditional architecture, and natural landscapes. The parish church of San Pedro, located in Xomezana Riba, was built in the first half of the 14th century. This single-nave church stands out for its attached tower with arches on all three sides of its ground floor and a bell tower. Inside, it houses a Baroque altarpiece covered with abundant gold leaf, reflecting the presence of several wealthy Asturian lineages in the area. In addition, other Rococo altarpieces and an image of Saint Peter are preserved. The church is also known for having offered, in times past, the possibility of redemption to repentant criminals who passed through its doors, welcomed by the parish community through a corresponding rite. In Xomezana Baxo, you'll find the La Panerona Ethnographic Museum, a renovated old breadbasket that preserves and displays tools, everyday objects, and traditional pieces that show what life was like in the Lenense villages. It's a space that pays tribute to popular culture and allows visitors to better understand the history and customs of the area. The Mills Route departs from Xomezana Baxo, a trail that follows the course of the Piquinu River and connects the two villages. Along its 2.5 km, you can find up to 16 water mills, built between the 16th and 20th centuries, used to grind cereals such as corn. This route, of easy difficulty and with a 200-meter gradient, offers a shaded walk among chestnut trees and allows you to appreciate the rural architecture of the area.
